Heads Up on L.A. shows in January

Otmaro Ruiz's Site shows that he'll be playing with the Alain Caron Quartet at the Baked Potato on January 19 and at LA VE'LEE on January 20. The band features Frank Gambale and Paul Brochu on drums.

Once again, to any HOD folks able to make it, a review would be appreciated, thanks.

PS: Paul Brochu will also be performing at the NAMM's Yamaha Groove Night alongside 25 other drummers I think... If I am not mistaken, Peter Erskine and Dave Weckl will also be part of it.

Yam Groove Nite is hard to get into. Dealers get first serve on passes and they usually are grabbed up. I miss this every year and would love to check it out. I'll miss Vinnie w/t Jazz Ministry

Peter Erskine will definetly be playing at groove night, but he will also be playing Friday and Saturday at the Evans booth at 11 and 2 with his trio.

Out of curiosity... Who's considering going to see any of these shows?

BTW... If you're into musician's drummer that's got real greasy feel, strong pocket and musicality (and nice chops too), you may not be disappointed... But if you're only into Virgil type pyro-technical drummers, don't go... [img]wink.gif[/img]

Gregg Bissonette will be playing at Cafe Cordiale on Sunday, Jan. 18th around 9PM after NAMM. This is with his Jazz group and is TONS of fun. They do funny version from the Real Book.

I'll be there for sure.

Go see Paul and Alain, you won't be disappointed. They're into musicality but they can open the machine like crazy, you might be surprised [img]eek.gif[/img] . And they'll be at the Potato so...
Reviews would be great.

Other internationally known Quebecers artists: Gino Vanelli, Celine Dion, Maynard Ferguson, Oscar Peterson, Oliver Jones, Cirque du Soleil, Robert Lepage (creator of the Peter Gabriel shows and also David Bowie, Laurie Anderson), Michel Cusson (ex-Uzeb and amazing guitarist and composer, subbed for Eric Johnson in G3 alongside Vai & Satriani to say the least...).

I'm sure Beat Hit could add some more.

Come on Beat give Virgil a break [img]tongue.gif[/img] yes he is extremely technical and brilliantly over the top at times at times but the Guy can lay it down very nice when he chooses to, he does it very well with CAB and others, have seen it myself. Yes I know it is hard to beleive but it is true, hey the guy likes to push the physical boundaries and that is ALRIGHT with me I soak it up like a sponge just like I dig the more simplistic down to earth playing at the same time. And yes I do dig Brochu a VERY VERY good drummer who has great technique good chops and has a nice feel, I would take the show in if I could. Take it easy Beat Hit and regards.

My post never said that Virg can't lay it down... I was merely naming him as a reference that's all... I could have named Thomas Lang more appropriately maybe... Dunno... I was aiming at those drum bros who are only touched by technical players that's all... I look forward to hear Virg in a pocket situation.... Besides, playing a simple 4/4 groove does not make you a gut-bucket greasy player either... Dave W is an example... Love his playing but he's not as greasy.... As Dennis Chambers or even in this case a Paul Brochu... IT's been said many times on HOD before so... I am repeating myself here...

Nice clarification on that Beat. One name that(also) stands out when I think of greasy is Richie Hayward, tremendous feel just something innate going on there his playing. I have the Montreal Drum Fest recordings from 96-97 and Paul
really tears it up during his clinic spot, very nice balance to his playing. And yes your right playing something simple does not=good feel. Some guys no matter what they are playing sound and feel like a hammer hitting steel.

A few years ago, the great NY percussionist Don Alias was putting together his own band-project to tour Europe. He had chosen Brochu to be his drummer... Some reasons to have chosen him must have been his great supporting skills for one, but also his listening ears, story-telling solos and ability to musically detect tom-fills opportunities...
